A checklist for your business website

Sixteen practical checks for content, contact, mobile usability and a clear handover.

By Webtavo

Start with the customer’s next step

A website does not need to be large to be useful. Visitors should understand what you offer, feel confident and be able to take the next step. Use the checklist to test a new website before launch or to identify priorities on an existing one.

Test each point yourself

Check one item at a time and mark it only after you have tried it. Write down what needs to change and who is responsible. Start with issues that prevent reading, calling, booking or sending an enquiry.

When several checks fail

Gather the main issues in a short brief: what is wrong, which page is affected and what the customer should be able to do instead. A provider can then propose a focused improvement or explain when replacing the website is more appropriate.

Your ticks are only used on this page and are not saved when you leave. Download the list to keep your progress. This is a working checklist, not an SEO score.

Check: Show the homepage to someone unfamiliar with the business. Can they explain what you do, who you help and how to contact you?

Check: Check what is included, who each service is for and what information is needed for a quote.

Check: Compare the website with your real business profiles. Check names, email, phone, hours and visit details.

Check: Check usage permission for images, logos and testimonials. Distinguish fictional examples from real work.

Check: Try the links on a phone and verify the number and recipient.

Check: Submit an authorised test enquiry and check the inbox, spam folder and reply address.

Check: Test successful submission and missing required fields. Submitted information should not disappear unnecessarily.

Check: Follow each link and verify that it reaches the business’s real profile or location.

Check: Test portrait and landscape views, navigation, forms and long headings. Check for horizontal scrolling.

Check: Enlarge text and try Tab, Shift+Tab and Enter. Check visible focus and labelled form fields.

Check: Try a mobile connection. Prioritise problems that prevent reading or contact.

Check: Go from home to a service and then contact. Test the logo, menu and back navigation.

Check: Each page should accurately describe its own content.

Check: Check accessibility without login, accidental noindex, the sitemap and old addresses. Indexing is not guaranteed.

Check: Understand what forms and tools collect, why and who handles it. Seek a separate legal assessment where needed.

Check: Confirm domain ownership, accounts, changes, ongoing costs and the process for switching providers.
